Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Stockwell
Gardeners Stockwell is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. This Health and Safety policy sets out our aims, responsibilities and procedures for managing risks associated with professional gardening work.
Policy Aims and Objectives
Our primary objective is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property or the environment. We will identify hazards, assess risks and implement proportionate control measures to ensure that all gardening tasks are carried out safely and responsibly.
We will review this policy regularly and revise it when there are significant changes in legislation, working practices, equipment or the nature of the services we provide.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Gardeners Stockwell has overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining effective health and safety arrangements. This includes:
Ensuring that suitable risk assessments are completed for all key gardening tasks, such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, planting, tree work and waste handling. Providing adequate resources so that safe equipment, protective clothing and training are available. Making sure that employees are made aware of this policy and any related procedures, and that these are applied consistently across all jobs and locations. Monitoring health and safety performance and investigating accidents, incidents and near misses to reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee and contractor working on behalf of Gardeners Stockwell has a duty to safeguard their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees must:
Follow all safety instructions, training and site-specific rules given by supervisors or clients. Use machinery, tools, vehicles, chemicals and personal protective equipment correctly and only for their intended purpose. Report hazards, defects, near misses, accidents and ill health to management without delay. Cooperate with any accident investigations, health surveillance or training requirements. Refrain from working under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or engaging in horseplay, dangerous shortcuts or unauthorised activities.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting work at any garden, residential or commercial site, we assess potential hazards relating to the terrain, access, slopes, weather, underground services, overhead lines, public access and the presence of vulnerable persons or animals. Suitable control measures are then implemented, including:
Planning work sequences to minimise risks from moving equipment and vehicles. Establishing exclusion zones where necessary to separate machinery from the public and other workers. Adapting methods of work during adverse weather conditions, such as high winds or extreme heat, to protect employees and clients.
Training, Supervision and Competence
We provide appropriate instruction and training so that all gardeners are competent to carry out their duties safely. This may include equipment operation, safe use of ladders, manual handling techniques, use of pesticides and awareness of local environmental considerations. New employees and less-experienced staff are supervised closely until they are deemed competent.
Refresher training is provided when new equipment is introduced, methods change or risk assessments identify a need for additional instruction.
Work Equipment and Machinery
All machinery and tools, including mowers, strimmers, hedge cutters, blowers and hand tools, are selected, used and maintained in accordance with manufacturer guidance and relevant safety regulations. Our arrangements include:
Regular inspection, maintenance and servicing of equipment. Prompt removal from service of any defective or unsafe machinery. Safe storage and transport of equipment between sites to prevent damage or injury. Ensuring guards, safety switches and emergency stops are present and functional.
Chemicals, Fertilisers and Substances
Where garden chemicals, fertilisers or other substances are used, we follow specific safe handling and application procedures. This includes referencing product safety information, using suitable personal protective equipment, preventing contamination of watercourses and minimising exposure to clients, the public, wildlife and pets.
Only trained and authorised personnel may use professional-grade products. Containers are clearly labelled, securely stored and never decanted into unmarked bottles.
Manual Handling and Physical Strain
Gardening often involves lifting, carrying, digging, bending and repetitive movements. To reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, we:
Provide training on safe lifting techniques and task planning. Use mechanical aids or team lifts for heavy or awkward loads. Plan work to vary tasks and reduce prolonged repetitive actions. Encourage staff to report early signs of strain so adjustments can be made.
Traffic, Vehicles and Site Access
When operating vehicles or towing trailers to and from client premises, we ensure drivers are competent, vehicles are roadworthy and loads are secure. On site, we take care when parking and manoeuvring to protect pedestrians and property and to maintain clear access routes for emergency services.
Public Safety and Client Protection
We recognise our duty of care to clients, visitors and the general public in and around the gardens and outdoor spaces where we work. We manage public safety by:
Using barriers, cones or clear signage where appropriate. Scheduling high-risk tasks to reduce contact with pedestrians, such as at quieter times of day. Managing noise, dust and debris so that inconvenience and risk are minimised.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment is provided and used where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. Depending on the task, this may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and ear protection, high-visibility clothing, respiratory protection and weather-appropriate garments. Employees are expected to take care of their equipment and report loss or damage so that it can be replaced promptly.
Accidents, First Aid and Emergencies
Accidents, incidents and near misses are recorded and investigated to identify root causes and preventative measures. First aid arrangements and equipment are maintained, and staff know how to obtain assistance in the event of an injury, fire, chemical spill or other emergency while working at client properties or in public areas.
Environmental Considerations and Wellbeing
Gardeners Stockwell aims to protect both the natural environment and the wellbeing of employees and clients. We minimise waste, dispose of green and non-green waste responsibly and take steps to reduce pollution. We also monitor working hours, rest breaks and hydration needs, particularly during hot or cold weather, to support physical and mental health.
Review and Policy Communication
This Health and Safety policy is communicated to all employees and is available to clients on request. It is reviewed periodically, and whenever necessary, to ensure it remains effective and aligned with current working practices and applicable health and safety requirements.
